Sure Signs of Spring

It appears Farmer Pat and Farmer Bonnie aren't the only ones getting ready for our May 2nd opening. While walking through the farm today I was amazed by all the signs of spring. Thought I'd share a few...

Sure sign #1- BIG Bellies on our Ewes.

Lightening is famous. She has been on NBC26, WGBA twice this winter. Although you may not recognize her without her wooly coat on!

Sure sign #2 - BIG Bellies on our Nanny Goats

Half&Half has always had triplets and one time even quads! By looking at her belly bulge, I'd say this spring will be no different.

Sure sign #3 - BIG Udders. 

Once the udders start to fill with milk you know the nanny is getting ready to deliver.

 Sure sign #4 - BIG Belly on Sis

Sis is usually the first Queen (female cat) on the farm to have her litter. She's a wonderful momma cat.

Sure sign #5 - Hair in the Rabbit's Box

Right before the Doe (female rabbit) gives birth she pulls the hair from under her chin to line her nest. It makes a comfy warm place for her kits (baby bunnies) to live until their hair grows long enough to keep them warm.

Sure sign #6 - Harmony in the Barnyard

As they say "birds of a feather flock together."  But wait! A drake (male duck), a rooster (male chicken) and a tom (male turkey) all hanging out??!??

Five Little Kittens Who Lost Their Mittens

Technically lost was the kittens, not the mittens. It took us 3 days to locate Sis and her litter because she had them so well hidden. Aaliyah eventually found them in a corn crib all curled up in the far corner. Ahh...

Spend Father's Day at the farm!

1 FREE Dad per family group on Sunday, June 20th. Open at 10 AM.

Oh how they grow!

Granddaughter Aaliyah and I spent time visiting with the ponies at the farm today. It dawned on me how much Storm (born March 30th 2009) and Princes (born May 19th 2009) had GROWN! Thought you'd enjoy seeing for yourself.

Storm THEN...Farmer Pat had to kneel to be close to him.

Storm NOW...he's as tall as Aaliyah!



THEN...Princes next to her mom, Blondie...NOW she's as tall as her mom!

Princess was all legs when she was born. Now she's all mischief.

Otis the Boar is happy and "tickled pink" to spend the winter in the sow barn where he's protected from the winter winds and he can snuggle into fresh straw and keep toasty warm.

Pumpkin season begins Sept. 26th

Rocky, born August 5th, will be just two months old when you visit him this fall. Beginning September 26th through October 31st the farm will be open 7 days a week.

Along with the full tour of the farm, (hayride, pony ride, milking Elsie the cow and more!) included in your admission is a trip to the Pumpkin Patch to pick your own FREE pumpkin.

A sea of pumpkins!

See'm? Every pumpkin flower you see is a future pumpkin!
Well....sort of. If it's a female flower anyhow. Male flowers will not produce a pumpkin. Notice the difference below? The female shows signs of the future pumpkin fruit, the male doesn't.

Female......... Male

Just like our hens need a rooster in the coop with them in order for her eggs to be fertile. The female pumpkin flower needs a male flower present to pollinate her. However, being that they are just flowers, they need our help! We can pick the male flower and self-pollinate the females but this would take Farmer Pat an awful looonnnnng time to do 6 acres of pumpkins, so we depend on bees.

In fact we have a local bee keeper bring a pallet of bee hives to the farm to help in the pollination process. I'll try to remember to take a picture and post the hives. Hope I don't get stung...ouch!
